Geometry Dish

Yesterday I had a lovely stir fry from local deli counter.  I chose it because the vegetables were exactly what I bought at our local farmer's market this weekend.  It didn't have a label, but I thought of it as “Linear Stir Fry” as it was vibrantly colored with green, yellow, and red peppers.  Strips of yellow summer squash and zucchini also contributed to the linear look of the dish.  A closer look led me to revise my name to “Shape Stir Fry”.  Watercress discs, rectangles of bamboo shoots, and celery crescents gave a nice crunch factor to the softer linear vegetables.  A slice of star fruit and a heart shaped cookie for dessert would have made for a fairly complete geometry lesson, as well as a well-balanced meal for anyone.

Wouldn't it be lovely if all of life's lessons were so deliciously presented?

Field Trip: Apple Orchard

I was thrilled to be able to accompany my granddaughter and her class to an apple orchard and cider mill.  A small, local operation, it was lovely to experience apple cider that was 100% apple, nothing else added.  A combination of apples, the flavor of fresh apples combined with the lush texture was simply divine.

Brought back memories of childhood, taking trips to the local orchard and mill with my father. Apple cider and powdered cake doughnuts: to me, those are the flavors of the start of fall.
